What operating system?
If it's 2000, XP, or Vista type "cmd" in the run dialog box (Start Menu/Run)
if it's older try "command"
this will make sure you're not starting anything but the command prompt... It sounds like you're starting a command prompt that is more specific to Visual Studio.
